Spello,
rises between Assisi and Foligno, situated on a spur of the Subasio mountains,
above a fertile and well-irrigated plain. The fascinating village is developed
beside Assisi (7 kilometres), where the Subasio mountains begin to go
up. Its Medieval buildings are made in pink stones by creating a suggestive
atmosphere.. and around, where there are no constructions, romantic hills
covered by olive plants reach Assisi. The particular location of Spello
allows to quickly arrive to the famous town of San Francesco of Assisi.
Spello, “la splendidissima Colonia Julia”, is rich of monuments
testifying to the Roman era; for example, the town walls, the ruins of
the theatre and of the amphitheatre, the thermal baths and the splendid
town portals ( Porta Consolare, Urbica and Porta Venere) dating back to
the Augustean era. In ascent, you'll arrive at the church of St. Mary
Maggiore built Between the 11th and 12th centuries, which, even if it
can boast a beautiful facade riconstructed with antique materials in 1644
at the same time as other architectonic modificatione were undertaken,
guards its most precious treausure inside. In fact, the marvellous Baglioni
Chapel is to be found on the left-hand side of the nave. with its paintings
by Pinturicchio showing the "Annunciation", the "Nativity"
scene and the "Dispute at the Temple", among other frescoes
by the same painter which are to be found the chapels under the cross
vaults and paintings by Perugino on the pilasters of the entrance to the
presbytery. Close by, it is possible to visit the church of St. Andrew
(13th century), which contains the painting of the "Madonna and the
Saints" by Pinturicchio.
The Wine and Hill structure located in Spello is a nice villa in the
countryside at one kilometre from Spello downtown and as well as the exit
of the main road (SS 75 BIS, Spello exit number 10).
Montefalco
is 473 m above sea level on the crest of the hill. Thanks to this beautiful
position, which dominates the surrounding area (Perugia, Spoleto, Bevagna,
Giano dell’Umbria) it has been called the balcony of Umbria, as
all central Umbria can be viewed from its walls.
In the old town W&H suggests to see Town Square- the highest point,
at the hearth of the medieval city-, the Church of San Francesco and Civic
Museum- the early 14th century church was built by Francescan monks and
had a central nave and side chapels. The bell tower has frescoes painted
between 1450 and 1452 by the Florentine Benozzo Gozzoli. Montefalco is
rich of other important churches from the artistic point of view ,such
as Church of San Agostine, Santa Maria di Piazza, S. Lucia, Santa Maria
Maddalena, Santa Chiara da Montefalco, Santa Illuminata and San Leonardo.
The Wine and Hill structure is located in Montefalco downtown, in
an ancient large house of medieval origin.
